Synthetic Elections: are we prepared for generative AI in 2024?

Join Demos online as we launch our new report that responds to how we navigate generative AI in an election year.

26 Mar 2024 - 26 Mar 2024

2:00 pm - 3:00 pm GMT

Generative AI has taken the world by storm. Policymakers, companies and the public are scrambling to work out how they should respond to the exponential development of these tools. We’ve seen AI-generated audio of politicians going viral, chatbots offering incorrect information about elections, and celebrities attacked with deepfake pornography. At the same time, experts warn that AI panic, in an already fraught year for political trust and stability, could do more harm than good.

Join us as we discuss how to navigate and respond to generative AI in an election year: from what technology companies ought to be putting in place to how legislators and political parties should react. We’ll discuss Demos’ new report, in partnership with the UCL Digital Speech Lab: our panellists will explore how generative AI tools might impact democratic integrity, both in the run up to elections, and the role they might play in the future practice of democratic institutions.

Speakers:

  • Nighat Dad, Member of the Oversight Board for Meta
  • Dr Jeffrey Howard, Associate Professor of Political Philosophy and Public Policy, UCL
  • Ellen Judson, Senior Fellow, Demos
  • Polly Curtis, Chief Executive, Demos (Chair)
