Demos comment: Government pledges electoral reform
Today, the government announced its new strategy for modern and secure elections, commenting on the need to rebuild trust in our democracy.
Responding to the news, Polly Curtis, Chief Executive at Demos, said:
“Yes, it’s bold, but alone it’s not enough. Today’s announcement shows us that the government recognises the cracks in our democracy, and that is a cause for commendation. It’s high time action was taken to address the dearth of bravery that’s plagued Westminster policy-making for so long.
“However, critics will be fast to suggest this move by the government is borne purely out of the desire to secure political advantage. If this administration is serious about upgrading our democracy, it’s critical that this move kicks off significant further efforts to sharpen our democratic processes.
“That means more than electoral reform, it means empowering communities, super-charging public engagement through deliberative programmes and even addressing the vulnerabilities in our online information supply chains. Without a concerted and coherent strategy to build a more collaborative democracy, today’s move could prove little more than a sticking plaster solution.”
