Cost of Asthma

Asthma is a chronic disease that can affect all aspects of an individual’s life and those of their family. Managed well, patients can have a reasonable expectation of engaging in economic activity as well as their peers. However evidence from Asthma UK suggests that three out of five people in the UK are not receiving the critical elements of routine asthma care that are outlined in NICE guidelines; four out of ten find it interferes with their daily lives.

This research project uses existing academic literature, plus a new exploration of UK-wide datasets to estimate the cost of severe asthma in the UK, for patients, their families, the taxpayer and the economy.
