Payment Power

Demos and VocaLink are delighted to host two seminars on the future of the payments system in the UK. Speakers at the events, which mark the release of a new Demos report, Payment Power, will include Mark Garnier MP and Nick Davies from DWP.

Next April will see a new regulator being introduced to oversee the payments system, which is responsible for every card purchase, payment or bank transaction in the UK. The Treasury has tasked the regulator with promoting greater competition in the retail banking sector, as well as ensuring that payment systems operate in the interests of their users.

Demos and VocaLink are convening two roundtables to discuss these important issues, and to mark the launch of a new Demos report on the topic, Payment Power:

The Payments System and the State:
Thursday 12th June, 9.00am – 10.30am

This seminar will open with comments from Nick Davies from the DWP’s Universal Credt team, and will explore the ways in which the government and welfare state currently uses the payment system and discuss opportunities for more innovative uses (including the transfer of information) in the wake of the introduction of Universal Credit and real-time information.

The Payments System and the Economy:
Thursday 19th June, 8.30am – 10.00 am

The seminar will be lead by comments from Mark Garnier MP from the Treasury Select Committee, and will consider how a better governance and strategic innovative direction in the payments system could benefit the consumer and wider economy, and discuss the challenges of financial inclusion and access to payments.

The seminars will be held in Central London. Please note these are invitation-only events. To request a place, at either or both, please contact us at [email protected] or call us on 0207 367 6331 with any access queries.
