Masterclass 9: Researching social media for policy

The rise of social media is one of the most transformative opportunities that researchers have ever had. Whether arguing, debating, expressing attitudes or campaigning for change; more and more of life is shared on social media, creating vast amounts of data that can be collected and analysed.

For the last seven years, the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media has been developing tools and techniques to research social media. Research Director Carl Miller will lead a Masterclass on what we’ve found, sharing insights, challenges, the methods that work best, and how social media research can help organisations across society become smarter and better informed.

Using technology developed by CASM’s technical team based at the University of Sussex, you’ll get a chance to collect social media data on an issue you care about, train an artificial intelligence algorithm to analyse it, and take the results away with you. Carl will share the free tools and technologies that are available, allowing you to conduct social media research of your own in the future.

This Masterclass will be delivered by Carl Miller, Research Director CASM
