Living with disability: Improving employment outcomes

Lord Holmes joins Demos at a private roundtable to discuss employment outcomes for disabled people.

This roundtable is part of a series being held at all three party conferences to mark the launch of an essay collection that Demos is producing with VODG to explore the different areas of everyday life for disabled people.

This roundtable will focus on the Leonard Cheshire Disability essay from the collection about employment of disabled peopled.  As disabled people’s employment rates have hovered at 50% for many years, what more can the Government do to crack this most difficult of policy issues and unlock the productivity gains associated with higher employment in this group? This roundtable discussion will consider the following questions:

  • What more can be done to make the most of work choice and access to work?
  • Should we be looking more closely at partnerships with employers to overcome negative perceptions and increase flexible working opportunities? What role might work experience/trials have‎ in this respect?
  • Is there anything we can learn from international approaches?

Speakers will include:

Lord Holmes of Richmond
Claudia Wood, Chief Executive, Demos
Clare Pelham, Chairman, VODG (Chair)
