Knowledge Nomads

Knowledge Nomads Picture

Part of the Atlas of Ideas

How can the UK become a 'magnet for talent'? What inspires or inhibits highly skilled workers from coming here? What levers are available to governments, policy makers, business and universities to increase their ability to attract such talent?

'Knowledge Nomads, which forms part of The Atlas of Ideas 2.0, will explore the dynamics that influence this much sort after group.
'Knowledge Nomads' - they are highly skilled, highly mobile and highly sort after. Surprisingly little is known about them yet the world's skilled population is having a disproportionate effect on flows and concentrations of science, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Over the next six months, Demos will, through a set of four case studies, endeavour to make a major contribution to the UK's understanding of what really does motivate 'knowledge nomads' - uncovering trends, barriers and opportunities that can then be extrapolated to the wider UK innovation system.

Our proposed case studies include:
- A corporate R&D centre: Pfizer's European Headquarters for R&D in Sandwich, Kent
- A University Department:
- A city-level innovation system: working with Manchester: Knowledge Capital
- A entrepreneurs' network: the UK-India Business Council

Through these case studies, we aim to illuminate the often hidden link between migration and innovation and assist universities, companies, regions and governments in their quests to become 'magnets for talent'.
