The ‘Active Ageing’ report by Anchor Hannover – England’s largest not-for-profit provider of care and homes for over 55’s – in association with Demos, highlights the costs of physical inactivity in older people to the NHS. By 2030 this could be as much as £1.3bn. The report also highlights the human cost of inactivity in later life, illustrating how inactivity not only contributes to poorer physical health, but also cognitive decline, reduced emotional wellbeing and loneliness.

These findings highlight the scale of the UK’s inactivity problem. Also launching today is a pilot program tackling inactivity in older people that a diverse range of organisations – including Demos and Anchor Hanover – have come together to launch, called 10 Today. The program is made up of easy to follow 10-minute exercises designed by older people, for older people. Videos of the exercise routines are available online and will be broadcast on local radio stations CHBN Radio in Cornwall at 10am daily and BCB Radio in Bradford at 2pm. 10 Today is supported by Lottery Funding from Sport England.
