Opening up expert advice

Date and time:
Friday, 8th December 2006 at 9:00am
Location:
EEF, Broadway House, Tothill Street, London, SW1H 9NQ
The politics of expertise are changing. Over the last two decades, scientists and politicians have been buffeted by public controversies involving science. Heated debates, such as those around BSE and the MMR vaccine, have destabilised the old model of ‘science speaking truth to power.’

Since 1997, the government have started to open up expert advice. In The Received Wisdom, Jack Stilgoe, Alan Irwin and Kevin Jones argue that this process of opening up needs to go further. Twenty years on from the initial discovery of BSE, how close are we to a new model of knowledge, evidence and expertise?

Join us for the launch of a new Demos pamphlet by Jack Stilgoe, Alan Irwin and Kevin Jones

Responses from:
  • Sir John Krebs, Principal of Jesus College, Oxford and former Chair of the Food Standards Agency
  • Richard Horton, Editor of The Lancet and Author of MMR: Science and Fiction
  • Sue Mayer, Director, Genewatch
  • Bill Stow, Director General, Environment, Defra
Friday, 8 December, 9am – 2pm
Presentation, responses and discussion followed by an informal lunch
