The politics of expertise are changing. Over the last two decades, scientists and politicians have been buffeted by public controversies involving science. Heated debates, such as those around BSE and the MMR vaccine, have destabilised the old model of ‘science speaking truth to power.’
Since 1997, the government have started to open up expert advice. In The Received Wisdom, Jack Stilgoe, Alan Irwin and Kevin Jones argue that this process of opening up needs to go further. Twenty years on from the initial discovery of BSE, how close are we to a new model of knowledge, evidence and expertise?
